January 2008: Connecting Welcome to Seattle Woman’s second Women’s Directory. Originally we thought about calling this special annual publication “Connections” to reflect what it’s designed to do: connect our readers with the region’s amazing array of local businesses and services for and/or by local women. The editorial in this issue also aspires to help women make connections. In this year’s edition, we’ve described the best places for women to network in “Networking Around the Sound,” and Kathleen Miller, in her piece on contemporary relationships and money, focuses on teaching women to make some very fundamental connections, namely to understand that their long-term economic well-being can depend on staying closely involved in financial matters within a marriage or partnership. Kathleen also recommends that women who are taking time out to raise children keep their job skills up-to-date by maintaining professional connections and investing in continuing education programs. And Web expert Eva Chiu gives business owners sound advice for connecting with customers through sophisticated e-mail campaigns. Despite the theme of connections, we opted for the more straightforward “Women’s Directory” as the title. I guess we’re inclined to be literal when naming things. When we came up with the idea of creating a monthly magazine for local women we first set on calling it “Caliope,” the Greek muse of eloquence and epic poetry. It was a bit far reaching to be sure, and had pronunciation and spelling issues, but we liked it. Then a friend questioned whether people would understand what a magazine called “Caliope” would be about. When she said she’d know immediately with a name like “Seattle Woman” that the magazine was for her, we abandoned our literary title for a more literal one. As we grow our distribution on the Eastside and expand as we did last month into Pierce County, we’ve been asked if our name raises hackles in Bellevue or Tacoma. We certainly hope not. We like to think that “Seattle” refers not just to a location, but to a local ethos that reaches beyond city limits and values community, creativity, and smart, courageous women. With that spirit in mind, we’ll continue in 2008 to pursue our mission of connecting and informing women in our Northwest corner of the state. Marianne Scholl ©2008 Caliope Publishing Company |
